Family and Diabetes – prevention, cure and management

Diabetes is a very common metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. A person suffering from diabetes is unable to either make enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin the body makes. 1 in 2 people suffer from type 2 diabetes and they do not even know that they have it. Hence it is a necessity to learn more about the warning signs of diabetes and find out the risks of type 2 diabetes. Two of the most common ways of diabetes management are diet and exercise. These are the main changes that need to be made in one’s lifestyle. Losing weight can lower blood sugar levels. It is important to control the amount of portion eaten, and eating healthy is always a simpler way to start taking weight off. It is important to include fewer calories, fewer refined carbohydrates, more vegetables and fruits, fewer food that contains saturated fats, and more food with fiber. A session with a professional dietician is advisable. Along with eating healthy, it is important to exercise as well. Taking out 30-60 minutes for moderate intensity of aerobic exercise most days of the week can make all the difference.

Other types of diabetes prevention are as follows:

  1. Keeping the blood sugar in check – It is very important to carefully monitor your blood sugar level so that it remains within the target range. Now and then one needs to check their blood sugar multiple times a day.
  2. Medications and drugs – Another common way of diabetes management is being under a specific medication. Various drugs like meglitinides, biguanides, sulfonylureas, etc. can be used to maintain the level of insulin in the body.
  3. Insulin therapy – Insulin therapy is the most commonly used diabetes care, especially for people with type 2 diabetes. Insulin therapy is often prescribed to people when they haven’t been able to keep their blood glucose levels within the desired range, or other treatment plans have failed to cure. This therapy helps in preventing diabetes complications by keeping the blood sugar within the targeted range.
  4. Bariatric surgery – Sometimes when people have their BMI (body mass index) as 35 and above, they may be prescribed for bariatric surgery as a diabetes prevention measure. Although it helps by improving the blood sugar levels, it is a very costly procedure along with a small risk of death. It can also lead to long term complications like nutritional deficiency and osteoporosis.

Most diabetes prevention strategies involve making simple changes and adjustments to the diet and fitness routine. When one is in the pre-diabetic situation, there are certain things that one can do to control it from not developing into type 2 diabetes:

  • It is crucial to get at least 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise, such as walking or cycling or swimming.
  • Try avoiding saturated and trans fats, along with refined carbohydrates.
  • Eat-in smaller portions.
  • Diet must include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
